The Empis Automated Drug Infusion System is configured to work with Culex Catheters.

    All Culex catheters are:

  • Differentiated by color-coded beads
  • Sterilized in house
  • Recognized by both Culex and Empis software
  • Eligible for discounts on large orders
  • Available in precannulated animals from internationally recognized vendors.

Below is a list of catheters most commonly used with the Empis automated dosing system. Or, view a complete list of available catheters available here.

Catheters Part number Bead Color Dead Volume Description
Short Jugular CX-2011S Light blue 32 µl Use to cannulate the jugular vein. Only the sleeve of this catheter will lie outside the exit point, so animals with this catheter can be returned to a home cage for recovery. When using this catheter to draw blood, you must use a jugular extender (CX-2031S) to hook the animal to Culex.
Short Jugular - Straight Tip CX-2011S-ST Light blue 32 µl Use to cannulate the jugular vein. Only the sleeve of this catheter will lie outside the exit point, so animals with this catheter can be returned to a home cage for recovery. When using this catheter to draw blood, you must use a jugular extender (CX-2031S) to hook the animal to Culex.
Short Femoral CX-2021S Dark blue 56 µl Use to cannulate the femoral vein. Only the sleeve of this catheter will lie outside the exit point, so animals with this catheter can be returned to a home cage for recovery. You must use a femoral extender (CX-2032S) to hook the animal to Culex.
GI catheter CX-8001S White
(may look tan after sterilization)
56 µl Use to cannulate the stomach, duodenum, or peritoneal cavity. This catheter is designed for dosing. Only the sleeve will lie outside the exit point, so animals with this catheter can be returned to a home cage for recovery. No extenders are needed for hooking animals to the Empis dosing accessory.
Bile duct catheter CX-8000S Black 55 µl Use to cannulate the bile duct. Pair this catheter with a GI catheter in the duodenum to recirculate bile when you are not collecting. Only the sleeve of this catheter will lie outside the exit point, so animals can be returned to the home cage for recovery.

Drug Delivery

The BAS-1, BAS-MD, and BAS-Bile Tubing sets are filled and replenished through a single fluid source. The BAS-2 and BAS-3 have multiple syringes which can be refillable or non-refillable. For your convenience, BASi offers the following drug delivery options:

Product Part number Description
Serum Vial Kit CX-5040 Sterile vial kit includes 12 each of 10mL vial, vent line, and vial holder/label.  This kit is used for automated refilling of the Empis dosing syringe, and is most useful for dosing volumes greater than 2.7mL but less than 15mL.
Sterile Empty Bag MR-1213

The sterile empty bag can be filled with dosing or perfusion fluid.  It is used for dosing volumes greater than 10mL up to 150mL.  This option is most useful in conjunction with the BAS-1, BAS-MD and BAS-Bile to allow for continuous perfusion over an extended period of time.  It can also be filled with sterile water for GI dosing and tending.
