Training Workshop

EC-1 Principles and Applications of Electroanalytical Chemistry

Course Topics

Electrochemical Principles Fundamentals are presented in a non-mathematical fashion and illustrated with multiple examples. Topics include basic electrical circuits, electrochemical fundamentals, thermodynamics, electron transfer kinetics, and mass transport. Cells and Electrodes This discussion covers cell design for voltammetry, laboratory-scale electrosynthesis, and flow cell applications. Working electrode geometry and material, reference electrode selection, and auxiliary electrodes are discussed.

Electrochemical Instrumentation and Electronics
During this session, the basic circuits used in the instruments are discussed, including limitations which may affect experimental design.

Selected Techniques
The theory and applications of common techniques are presented. These include cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, controlled potential electrolysis, square wave voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry and polarography.

Trends and Special Topics
This session highlights important current research and future directions in the field. The specific topics presented will vary depending upon the interests of the participants. Potential topics include modified electrodes, glucose sensors, microelectrodes, electrochemical detection for liquid chromatography (LCEC), etc.

Laboratory Demonstrations and Training

Instrumentation
BASi® instruments used for demonstrations and training may include: EC epsilon, BASi 100B/W Electrochemical Analyzer, C-3 Cell Stand, CGME Controlled Growth Mercury Electrode, RDE-2 Rotating Disk Electrode, and DigiSim Simulation Software.

Laboratory Exercises and Training*
Common experiments will be performed such as cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. Training will include electrode care and CGME setup.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting
